Hidden Toxins + How To Avoid Them

Yes, eating clean, high quality real foods is key to good health…and so is minimizing our exposure to environmental toxins

 Toxins commonly hide in

  • Carpets
  • Pillows
  • Mattresses
  • Cooking pans
  • Makeup products
  • Skincare products
  • Hygiene products

PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid)

Found in teflon coated pans, stain resistant carpets and furniture.

Why is this a concern?

  • PFOA is a Persistant Organic Pollutant and bioaccumulative chemical, which means that this chemical stays in the human body for long periods of time.
  • PFOA is considered an endocrine disruptor (altering your body’s hormones).
  • PFOA is linked to causing infertility.
  • PFOA is linked to cancer.

Tips for reducing your exposure to PFOA

  • Try avoiding stain-resistant materials whenever possible, such as furniture, clothing and carpets.
  • Switch from “nonstick” cookware to cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic coated.
  • Look for MADESAFE seal/label on products (PFOA is legally not permitted in products with this label).

Fragrances

Found in perfume, beauty products, skincare products, room fresheners, laundry detergents, baby products, etc.

Why is this a concern?

  • Over 2,000 ingredients are used to make fragrances, and most of these ingredients are carcinogens and endocrine disruptors.
  • Phthalates is one of the many ingredients used, which is linked to negative impacts on neurodevelopment in children, increasing children’s risk of breast cancer, hormonal imbalances, etc.

Tips for reducing your exposure to toxic fragrance ingredients

  • Avoid any product that has “fragrance”, “parfum”, or “eua de toilette” on the label.
  • Search for items made with natural ingredients, such as essential oils. (tip: avoid unless you can pronounce or easily identify the ingredients listed on that product).
  • Look for MADESAFE seal/label on products.

Dioxins + Furans

Found in female care products, such as pads and tampons.

Why is this a concern?

  • Can linger in feminine care products and be transferred directly into the body.
  • These chemicals have been linked to cancer, hormone dysfunction, and reproductive issues.

Tips for finding safe feminine care products

  • Look for “Chlorine free” and “unbleached” labels on the products.
  • Look for Certified organic cotton.
  • Look for MADESAFE seal/label on products.
