Dry Brushing for Children

Dry Brushing for Children

Dry Brushing isn’t just for adults…

Sleepovers with my Godson are one of my most favorite things in the world. And at one of our most recent sleepovers, I introduced him to my Dry brush, and felt out whether he wanted to try this or not. He was open to it, and ended up liking it enough that we dry brushed again the next morning. He’s four years old and I wasn’t sure if he might think it’s too rough on the skin. So I told him I wanted to show him this really cool tool that Kiki (that’s what he calls me) uses to help her calm down and feel relaxed. He was immediately intrigued. I showed him how I dry brush my arms, to which he asked “can I try it now?” He tried it, liked it and then I had him brush my arms as well. It became an activity to do together before bed. And in the morning I asked him if he would like to Dry brush together, and he said YES!

A daily dry brushing practice helps increase circulation, encouraging elimination of metabolic waste. It can also provide stress relief, immune system support, hormonal support, and improve digestion and kidney function. Brushing stimulates the lymphatic system, which is the system responsible for waste products. So this is a great tool to implement overall, but there are further reasons for introducing this habit to children as well.

Brushing targets touch receptors and can help a child organize their central nervous system. This can calm down any over-active receptors and help bring a child’s level of alertness to a calm level. Kids are really dependent on routine, and through childhood, they experience a lot of changes and stimuli. Starting school, learning new things each week, changes to their routine like travel or other scenarios. Brushing could be a helpful tool to calm the nervous system, helping them process the stimuli more positively.

SOME BENEFITS associated with brushing include:

• The ability to handle new situations

• Focus

• Self-awareness

• Self-control
